Washington State University

From 2001 to 2002 I was Graduate Student at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. There I studied Computer Science at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I started in the Fall Semester 2001, and one year later in the Fall Semester 2002 I finished my Master of Science in Computer Science. I have written a very detailed diary, in which I wrote about this unforgetable time. I do not publish it online, though.
In particular, I took the following classes:
Fall Semester 2001
- CS 451 – Introduction to Database Systems
- CS 500 – Proseminar
Here I had to write a paper on a topic of my choice. I wrote the paper Petri Nets for Object-Oriented Modeling. - CS 542 – Computer Graphics
My semester project of this class was SOGO, a three-dimensional version of "Connect Four". - CS 555 – Computer Networks
- CS 560 – Operating Systems
Actually a brilliant introduction to the depths of the original UNIX, but because of my lacking fundamentals I had to withdraw this class. - CS 564 – Distributed Systems
An excellent introduction in Distributed Systems and CORBA by my professor and friend Dave Bakken.
Fall Semester 2002
- CS 460 – Operating Systems Architecture
Development of my own UNIX-like kernel. To avoid plagiarism by other students, I do not publish it online any more. - CS 516 – Algorithmics
hell ride through Theoretical Computer Science, but excellent nonetheless - CS 551 – Advanced Database Systems
- CS 562 – Fault Tolerance Computing
Principles of fault tolerant computer systems. Here I created two of my "Masterpieces". A literature survey titled Literature Survey On Quorum Systems and an analysis of the JavaSpaces technology with regard to fault tolerance (complete program here). - CS 566 – Embedded Systems
Summer Session 2002 und Fall Semester 2002
- EE 595 – Directed Study
Because of a change in the Master's program (CS 500 did not count any more), I was short of one credit, and so I did a small study on Fundamental Research Issues in Performance Analysis of Runtime Status Collection and Aggregation for Dave Bakken. For that, I wrote a performance analyzer, which was based on a Data Fusion System. In more detail, I described it in my report. - CS 702 – Master Examination
The final Master's exam.
